A New Vision: Singapore Media Fusion
Since the Media Development Authority (MDA) was created in 2003, Singapore media landscape has seen significant developments and changes:
· Singapore has evolved into a broadcast hub with the establishment of 16 out of 17 major international cable and satellite broadcast networks in Asia.
· Singapore is now home to international games and animation giants like LucasFilm Animation, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft.
· Made-by-Singapore films, television programmes, games, animation and publications are traveling the world and finding new fans in more than 70 countries.
Adding to the backdrop is a constantly-changing, technologically-advancing global media landscape, hence, it becomes apparent that while Singapore media industries have achieved so much, they still need to continually adapt and develop new strategies in order to stay relevant.
To do so, MDA launched its new blueprint for Singapore’s media industries: The Singapore Media Fusion Plan (SMFP) in early 2009.
 |
"The media sector is in the midst of dynamic change, driven by convergence and the rise of Asia as a content powerhouse and one of the most influential markets in the world. The Singapore Media Fusion Plan is our response to the altered global landscape. It gears up companies based in Singapore to respond to fresh opportunities in today’s new world order by enabling the creation of media content, services and applications that resonate with the world, while leveraging on Singapore’s strengths and strategic position as an East-West gateway,” said Dr Christopher Chia, Chief Executive Officer, Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA). |
Building on the achievements of an earlier blueprint called Media 21, the SMFP aims to strengthen the media ecosystem and support the creation of innovative content with global appeal.
The new vision: To make Singapore the Trusted Global Capital for New Asia Media.
· Media from New Asia: As interest and fascination in all things Asian grow around the world, Singapore aims to work with Asian partners to take Asian stories and content to global audiences. Steeped in traditional Asian values yet modern and cosmopolitan, Singapore is well-placed to act as a bridge between the East and the West.
· Media for New Asia: Asia represents one of the fastest growing consumers of media content in the world. Singapore aims to work with regional and international partners to produce content to cater to the increasing hunger among Asian audiences for content that reflects modern Asian sensibilities.
· Asia’s New Media: As Asia rides the wave of digital and technological change, new business opportunities are constantly being created. Singapore aims to tap into these currents to explore new business models, media content, applications and services, as well as enable experimentation and prototyping.
