We rely media for information, communication and entertainment. At the same time, there are endless messages from different media competing for our attention, making it important for people to understand the power of media to influence and shape our beliefs and perceptions. MDA aims to create greater public awareness and appreciation of the reach and power of media through various approaches and activities. Cyber wellness refers to the positive well-being of Internet users and a healthy cyber culture for the Internet community. MDA works closely with a number of partners to raise awareness about the core values of cyber wellness.
Consultation is an important cornerstone of classification as everyone is a media user or consumer in some way– whether watching a movie, reading a book or playing a video game. Greater involvement by the community not only contributes to more robust guidelines, but also enables the public to be better informed. More than 260 members of the public from all walks of life help MDA to regularly review content codes and guidelines to meet with changing needs and expectations. Classification enables consumers to make informed choices while protecting the young. Different media are guided by different classification practices; codes and guidelines shaped by community standards. Films, Videos, Video Games and Pay TV content have adopted classification ratings to ensure that there is choice through classification and consumer advice. Public Service Content (PSC) programmes are innovative concepts that have a public service value. MDA's public education efforts are aimed at highlighting the pertinent issues that media consumers would face, and empowering them to make informed choices.
